Chapter Six
“Um, hi. This is Danny Friedman, Paul’s friend? I was hoping he could call me back. I’ve been trying to reach him now for a few weeks. So, um, if this is Paul Merola’s phone could he call me back? Thanks.”
* * *
Several weeks passed and Paul’s frustration grew with each passing day. While Danny would say hello and good morning to him, that was it. Last night while he ate his Chinese takeout and stared at the television, Paul had decided this had gone on long enough; he needed to get to Danny so he could explain. He’d woken at dawn to search through the few mementos he’d managed to save and take with him throughout the years to find the perfect item. This morning he got to the office extra early and placed his little surprise on Danny’s desk with no note, nothing to identify where it had come from. Danny would remember. Of that, Paul was certain.
He started his work and sipped his coffee, nonchalantly keeping an eye trained on the entrance to the office while he waited for his files to populate. As if his body chemistry was now attuned to Danny’s presence, a thrill shot through Paul when he spotted him walking through the door.
He watched Danny set his coffee down on his desk, then freeze in place. Paul held his breath and turned his chair to fully face Danny’s desk, waiting for an acknowledgment. Instead, Danny picked up what Paul had left him, opened his desk drawer and dropped it inside. He took off his coat and hung it up then sat down and turned on his computer. Maxi said something and they began a rapid fire, whispered conversation Paul bet had something to do with him, from the speculative glances Maxi shot his way.
Feeling somewhat foolish, Paul’s smile faded and he turned around to face his desk. Obviously Danny chose to hold on to his anger, and it would take more than a kiss and a little gift to make it right. Paul had no idea if it would work; he only knew the last time he lost Danny through no fault of his own. This time he wouldn’t let him go without a fight. He began to work on his case, losing himself in the numbers.
“Danny’s a master at hiding his feelings from everyone.”
Maxi, dressed in another colorful outfit, her red hair twisted atop her head, stood beside him. Paul smiled effortlessly and tried to brush her off.
“I found something funny I thought he’d like. That’s all.”
She rolled her eyes and snorted. “Yeah? I think there’s a lot more to it.”
Obviously their good rapport had evaporated. “I don’t know how much Danny’s told you, but we have a history. He’s different…special.” Wistfully, he peered around Maxi and found Danny staring at him. Weariness etched fine lines in his pallid face and Paul’s heart squeezed with guilt, knowing he was the cause. Danny looked away and began pecking at his keyboard.
“You’re damn right he is.
